If Your Employee Steals From You, General Liability Does NOT Cover It

Employee Stealing

"My employees would NEVER steal from me."  We hear this from business owners frequently.  You would be amazed at how many claims we file from small business owners that have key employees steal money.  It usually starts out small.  Employees "BORROW" $20 from the cash drawer over the weekend and never put it back because nobody notices.  Then they have a family emergency and need $100.  Then it spirals out of control into the thousands of dollars.

General liability policies typically do NOT include any employee dishonesty coverage.  Sometimes you can add the coverage by endorsement but we recommend that you get a separate policy usually in the form of a bond.  It typically isn't that expensive, usually under $500 in premium.

Usually, it is the employee that is closest to the owner.  We had a business owner call in one day about his administrative assistant stealing over $20,000 from him.  Not only was she a key employee, she was his kids babysitter.  He was so distraught over the entire ordeal because he felt like she was family and he would have loaned her the money had she just asked.  Now he feels like there was a death in the family.  The missing $20,000 was really causing a cash flow problem with his business though.
